Artist Statement

André Manzel Henderson is a visual artist whose work explores African history, the Atlantic slave trade, ancestral memory, and the continuing cultural legacy of the African diaspora. Working across multiple disciplines, painting, Henderson creates narrative works that connect historical events with contemporary identity and collective memory. His practice frequently examines the intersection of African spiritual traditions and Christianity while honoring the lives, histories, and experiences of people whose stories have often been overlooked or omitted from the historical record.

Biography

A descendant with roots in the Caribbean and the Deep South of the United States, Henderson draws upon a personal history shaped by the African diaspora and the cultural connections between the Caribbean and the Americas. Dividing his time between Aruba and Atlanta, he finds creative inspiration in both places, each with its own rich and complex history.

In The Journey, the viewer may not immediately recognize the human forms, but they remain present beneath the surface, enveloped by the rough waters. Their subtle presence speaks to lives that disappeared from view but were never erased from history or ancestral memory. This body of work, born from Henderson's introspection, honors those whose lives were stolen and those who were lost at sea during the transatlantic slave trade. Through these works, Henderson explores the psychology and spirituality of the people who endured such violent and tumultuous uprooting. He examines the inner strength, faith, ancestral memory and resilience which allowed his ancestors to survive captivity. Each work reflects a particular moment in time, creating a visual meditation on memory, loss, survival, and transcendence.
